Milton Practicum Experience
The summer of 2019 gave me the awesome opportunity to complete a practicum experience in Milton, Pennsylvania. During the time I spent, I built great relationships with students and staff, as well as the peers I completed the experience with. Placed in a 7th-grade classroom, I had a first-hand experience at the end of the year learning for students. One of my first opportunities for teaching a small group of students included a lesson introducing topics for the next school year. Using the online classroom resources, NearPod and GoogleDocs, I created an interactive lesson for students. The observation report from this lesson can be seen in the document below.
Through this experience, I was also able to coordinate and participate in a STEAM outreach night for students. My partner and I created a differentiated math-twister activity for grade levels K-7. This was a great learning experience for myself as well as the students. I also loved having the opportunity to work with students district-wide and learn more about those not within my own classroom!
The last few days of this experience included some of the most unique experiences for me as a pre-educator, field day, and a field trip. Through field day, I was able to meet and coach the entire school through baseball and flag football, an experience I will never forget! Likewise, the 7th grade took their field trip to the Pennsylvania College of Technology where my cooperating teacher and I explored with students career opportunities, such as dental hygienics and culinary arts. This experience allowed me to see the importance of building a great rapport with all students and learning their interests and career aspirations, regardless of how young they may be. After this experience, I was able to incorporate individual student interests into lessons and create relative math experiences to their future interests.
Overall, I am extremely grateful for this experience and look forward to using the new ideas and skills I have learned in future classrooms.
